Posted May 5th: From the Alabama West Florida Conference

To make financial contributions for the disaster response, churches and individuals can donate two different ways:

1. To donate through the AWF Conference Fiscal Office, click here. These donations will stay in the conference and will be used for in-conference relief efforts. Or mail checks to: Fiscal Office, attn. Conference Treasurer, 100 Interstate Park Dr., Suite 106, Montgomery, AL 36109, with "Tornado Disaster Response" in the memo line; or,

2. Through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Click here to make a donation that will be used throughout all the affected areas, including other states and conferences as well as Alabama-West Florida.

Local churches are encouraged by the Bishop to collect a special offering Sunday, May 8. The AWF Conference has received an emergency grant of $10,000 from UMCOR--your donations do make a difference.

AN UP-DATE FROM MONTGOMERY FIRST UMC:

Disaster Update
More supplies needed

Danny Rhyne, Cade Armstrong, Elizabeth Crockett and I just delivered an entire horse trailer packed with supplies for those affected by the storms in Walker County. The goods were collected yesterday at our Church's Picnic. We drove through some of the tornado's path of destruction on the way to Parrish, AL and the feeling of raw devastation strikes the heart and mind as one can only imagine losing absolutely everything, including even loved ones in some cases.

We delivered the supplies to the Parrish Church of the Nazarene which is one of the three EMA distribution centers in Walker. It serves the communities of Cordova, Sipsey, Good Springs, Aldredge, Flat Woods, Boley, Argo, Berry, Oakman, and Jasper. It is a church gym that has already been filled and emptied since collections began coming in on Friday.  The sense of hope and of God's goodness and care that He shines through the Body of Christ was palpable.

We will be sending more goods to this center later this week. You may bring them to Wesley Hall 204 at the church anytime during regular hours.  The priorities from the list we have already sent out are: canned food, sports drinks, charcoal, chap stick, sun screen, bug spray, batteries and dog food.  We left with a prayer from the people of First Methodist, Montgomery, and with a promise of our return. Please help if you can by sending in donations to buy supplies or the supplies themselves, and we hope you will join us on Wednesday, May 4th at 5:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary for a prayer vigil for all the victims of the storms.  Bring canned goods with you this Wednesday, every person who came for supplies needed food!

God's Peace,
David R. Saliba

WE ALSO HAVE COLLECTION POINTS SET UP AT PRATTVILLE FIRST; WOODLAND, PIKE ROAD; PARK MEMORIAL, TROY; AND FRAZER MEMORIAL. Linda

Posted May 3rd:

Following the tornado and/or wind damage the past few weeks we have had lots and lots of people volunteering to help.  This is great except for one small matter.  Volunteers must be trained and certified before being allowed to enter the clean-up zone.  This is a simple procedure and can be accomplished in one day.

Next Early Response Team Training (ERT) is scheduled for
Saturday, June 4th
9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Liberty United Methodist Church
5607 Tallapoosa St., Notasulga, AL 36866
Led by Rev. Michael Lawler, MTOP Disaster Coordinator

If you wish to register for this training and be prepared to help following the next disaster, contact Rev. Lawler to register.  His contact info is bumcoffice@troycable.net  or call 334-735-3180

DISASTER RESPONSE IN OUR DISTRICTS    -    May 2, 2011

We have had a tremendous outpouring of aid throughout the Conference and everything is greatly appreciated. Now we are a little more organized and have had time to bring items that may help those who have lost so much in such a short time. Hopefully these notes will help you and your church to provide love and support where it is needed most.

1)  First on our list: all affected by the tornadoes and those helping with clean-up need our thoughts and prayers for safety, relief and healing.

2) Volunteers turned out by the dozens this past weekend and all worked very hard. The big machines are at work now so fewer are needed during the week. We will have another massive clean-up day this Saturday, May 7th, from 8:00 to 5:00. All volunteers are asked to check in at the old hardware store in Eclectic (it is right on Main Street and will be clearly marked).
3) Collection points for supplies are:
Prattville First UMC, 100 4th St., Prattville (before Wednesday afternoon)
Montgomery First UMC, 2416 W. Cloverdale Park, Montgomery
Woodland UMC, 4428 Wallahatchie Rd., Pike Road
Park Memorial UMC, 750 Elba Hwy., Troy
